Baseball falls at St. Andrews

LAURINBURG, NC -- Catawba College fell 5-3 to host St. Andrews in baseball action on Tuesday afternoon at Clark Field. The Indians fell to 1-1, while St. Andrews improved to 7-3. The Knights took an early lead with three unearned runs in the first inning. Tribe starter Zach Snyder nearly got out of trouble, but a two-out double by Jason Caitlin plated a run and was followed by a two0run single by Philip Blue. Catawba fought right back in the second as freshman Matt Smith delivered a two-run double and Josh Jordan drove home the tying run with a sacrifice fly. The game remained tied until the fifth, when the Knights manufactured a pair of runs. Vincent Myers singled with one out, stole second, moved to third on a wild pitch and scored on a ground ball. The second run scored on a double by Bryan Brokow off reliever Jeff Abdelnour. St. Andrews pitcher Derek Batton improved to 2-0 with a complete game. He struck out nine and allowed just seven hits and one walk. Catlin had a pair of hits for the Knights. Smith had three hits for Catawba. #######
