Softball Collects 32 Hits in Doubleheader Sweep of Brevard
SALISBURY, NC -- Catawba swept visiting Brevard in a softball doubleheader on Thursday afternoon at Whitley Field, winning by the scores of 9-0 and 9-5. The Catawba Indians improve to 32-9, picking up their ninth straight win. The Tornados fall to 1-21.
Ryan Baker (Rockwell, NC) hit a pair of homers in the 13-hit attack in the opening win for Catawba. She put the Lady Indians on top with a solo homer in the second and ended the contest with a two-run homer in the sixth.
Jacqueline White (Mt. Ulla, NC) and Hillary Hampton (Salisbury, NC) each had three hits, while Baker and Allie Marshall (Pleasant Garden, NC) delivered three RBI. Lindsay Ettinger (Pasadena, MD) tossed the shutout, scattering four hits with five strikeouts as the senior improved to 17-4.
The Lady Indians rapped out 19 hits in game two with White, Kathryn Geouge (Canton, NC), Callie Gordy (Oak Ridge, NC) and Brittany Thornburg (Kings Mountain, NC) all collecting three hits. White singled home Geouge in the first inning and Catawba added three runs in the second to take a 4-0 lead. Thornburg doubled home a run, Geouge had a RBI triple and Gordy a run-scoring single.
White singled home another run in the fourth before Brevard got on the board on a two-run homer by Lindsey Morgan (Mt. Holly, NC) in the fifth. Kristen Tettemer (Newport, NC) doubled home a run as the Lady Tornados pulled within 5-3.
Catawba added some insurance runs, via the long ball, in the sixth. Kristyn Funderburke (Kings Mountain, NC) hit a two-run homer, while Hampton followed with a solo shot. Thornburg also went deep in the frame for a 9-3 lead. Brevard struck for two runs in the seventh with Tettemer adding another RBI double. Rachel Christian (Buckingham, VA) improved to 12-4 with the win for Catawba.
