Softball Drops Opening League Doubleheader at Presbyterian
CLINTON, SC -- Host Presbyterian swept Catawba in a South Atlantic Conference softball doubleheader on Saturday afternoon at the PC Softball Complex. The Lady Blue Hose won by the scores of 2-1 and 7-3 and improved to 22-7 overall and 2-0 in the SAC. The Catawba Indians fell to 32-11 and 0-2.
Presbyterian plated single runs in the first and second innings of the opener and held on for the win. The Blue scored an unearned run in the first after two-out singles by Laura Tate (Spartanburg, SC) and Jessica Peterka (Sarasota, FL) and a Lady Indians throwing error. Erin Stewart (Marion, SC) hit a solo homer in the second.
Kathryn Geouge (Canton, NC) led off the game with a double for Catawba, but the Lady Indian bats would go silent from there until the sixth inning. Allie Marshall (Pleasant Garden, NC) would single with two outs and scored on a two-out single by Hillary Hampton (Salisbury, NC).
Paige Cassidy (Orlando, FL) pitched the win for PC. She allowed three hits and struck out 10, but did walk six. Lindsay Ettinger (Pasadena, MD) surrendered four hits with no walks and nine strikeouts.
Catawba took a 1-0 lead in the third inning of game two, but PC erupted for five in the bottom half of the inning to take control. The big blow was a three-run homer by Cassady. Callie Gordy (Oak Ridge, NC) cut the deficit to 5-3 in the fifth as she singled home a pair of runs, but the Lady Indians left the bases loaded.
Michelle Ramsden’s (Brooks, GA) RBI triple and Rachel Bailey’s (Howard, OH) run-scoring single in the sixth gave the Lady Blue Hose a pair of insurance runs. Mary Gordon (Vernon, CT) picked up the win on the mound for PC.
