HARROGATE, TN -- Catawba won a pair of wild free-scoring games and swept a South Atlantic Conference baseball doubleheader from host Lincoln Memorial on Saturday at Hennon Field. Jerry Sands (Clayton, NC) and Matt Kepley (Greensboro, NC) led the Tribe’s hit parade in the opener, each collecting four of the 22 hits. Sands, Ryan Query (Kannapolis, NC) and Zach Evans (Greensboro, NC) delivered three RBI apiece.
David Thomas (Winston-Salem, NC) had a two-run double in a four-run first to get the Tribe going in the opener, but Lincoln Memorial responded with five runs, two on a double by Dustin Rowland (Eagle River, AK). Evans put Catawba right back on top with a three-run homer in the second.
The Indians led 9-7 after five innings and added another four-run frame in the sixth to begin to pull away. The first five Tribe batters reached base with Bubba Morris (Spencer, NC) collecting a RBI single and Craig Lyerly (Salisbury, NC) picking up a sacrifice fly.
The Railsplitter scored twice to pull within 13-9, but Catawba put three more runs on the board in the seventh. Sands had a home run and Kepley a RBI double. Catawba held leads of 7-0 and 10-3 early in the nightcap, but LMU rallied for a 12-11 lead after six frames. In the seventh, Kepley drew a two-out walk and moved to second on a balk. Sands would by intentionally walked and Thomas delivered a run-scoring single to tie the game.
Chad Baker (Jamestown, NC) pitched out of a bases-loaded, one-out jam in the eighth and the Tribe scored twice in the ninth. Sands singled with one out and after an error and a walk loaded the bases, Brian Sommer (New Port Richey, FL) singled home the go-ahead run. Zeb Link (Woodleaf, NC) was hit by a pitch to force in another run and Baker tossed a perfect ninth to earn his first win.
Thomas had a three-run home run in the first inning for Catawba and Sommer had a two-run double in the second.
