Baseball Finishes Off Weekend Sweep of LMU With 10th-Inning Win
Lyerly and Sands homer in ninth inning rally
HARROGATE, TN -- Catawba earned its second straight extra-inning win and completed a weekend sweep of host Lincoln Memorial with an 11-7, 10-inning victory, in South Atlantic Conference baseball action on Sunday afternoon at Hennon Field. The win improves the Catawba Indians to 23-12 overall and 11-7 in the SAC. The Railsplitters fall to 22-15 and 5-9.
Catawba rallied from a 6-3 deficit with a pair of two-run homers in the ninth then scored four times in the 10th to grab the win. Bubba Morris (Spencer, NC) reached on an error to open the ninth and Craig Lyerly (Salisbury, NC) followed with a home run to cut the deficit to 6-5. With one out, Matt Kepley (Greensboro, NC) singled and Jerry Sands (Clayton, NC) put the Tribe on top with a two-run shot.
Lincoln Memorial rallied for a run in the ninth on a one-out RBI single by Dustin Rowland (Eagle River, AK), but Chad Baker (Jamestown, NC) induced a double-play groundout to end the frame. The first three Catawba batters reached in the 10th then with one out, Kepley put the Tribe on top with a two-run single. David Thomas (Winston-Salem, NC) picked up a pair of insurance runs with a two-run triple.
Down 3-2 in the eighth innings, LMU started what appeared to be a winning rally with two outs and nobody on. Derek Treece (Powell, TN) walked and Casey Sedley (Miami, FL) singled. Sergio Beaz (Miami, FL) would single home the tying run, while Bryon Izzo (Mirimar, FL) put the Railsplitters on top with a three-run homer.
Catawba had taken a 3-0 lead in the second inning as Thomas led off with a triple and scored on a double by Zach Evans (Greensboro, NC). Brian Sommer (New Port Richey, FL) delivered a two-run homer for the 3-0 edge. LMU got a solo home run by Sedley in the fifth and scored an unearned run in the sixth.
Thomas was a perfect 4-for-4 for Catawba with the two triples, while Evans collected three hits. Mike Richardson (Murfreesboro, TN) had three hits for the Railsplitters.
