Women's Basketball moves within game of SAC lead with win at Wingate

WINGATE, NC -- Catawba College overcame a 12-point first half deficit and defeated host Wingate University 78-76 in South Atlantic Conference women's basketball action on Wednesday night at Cuddy Arena. Catawba improves to 18-5 overall and 8-3 in the SAC, while Wingate falls to 12-9 and 4-7. With Mars Hill's loss to Presbyterian, Catawba is now a game out of first place and in sole possession of second place. Catawba misfired on its first seven free throw attempts to help Wingate build a 34-22 lead with 6:16 left in the half. Dorthell Little (Rockingham, NC) got the Lady Indians within four at 35-31 with just under three minutes left, but Wingate would go back ahead at 41-33 on a three-pointer by Elizabeth Rogers at the 1:46 mark. Little would then score the last five points of the half to help Catawba cut the deficit to 41-40 at the break. Little finished the half with 19 points and nine rebounds. Wingate would hold the lead until a jumper by Desiree Pugh (Norlina, NC) gave the Lady Indians a 51-50 lead with 12:45 remaining. Ashley Cox (Richmond, VA) hit on consecutive three-pointers to put Catawba on top 57-54 with 11:20 to play. Wingate would regain the lead at 59-57, but Ella Pasola (Vantaa, FINLAND) tied the score on a jumper at the 9:38 mark and Catawba would not trail again. Catawba led 74-68 with just under two minutes to play, but a basket by Elizabeth Biedrycki and a three-pointer by Rogers cut the Lady Indian edge to 74-73 with 49 seconds remaining. Cox would hit two free throws with 28 seconds to play and after a turnover, she added another for a 77-73 advantage with 10 seconds remaining. Rogers cut the lead to a point on another three-pointer with two seconds left, but that was the last shot for Wingate. Little finished with 24 points and 13 rebounds to lead Catawba. Cox fired in a career-high 18 points and Pasola equaled a season-best with 15 points. Freshman Isiaette Darden (Wilson, NC) added 10 points, while Pugh pulled down 10 rebounds. Biedrycki led Wingate with 25 points and 17 rebounds, while Rogers scored 24 and Ginny Boggess added 10. #####
