Men's Basketball drops fourth SAC outing in last five
WINGATE, NC -- Catawba College fell to NCAA II 23rd ranked Wingate University 91-76 in South Atlantic Conference men's basketball action on Wednesday night at Cuddy Arena. The Bulldogs improve to 21-4 overall and 9-2 in the SAC, while Catawba falls to 17-6 and 7-4. Wingate pulled out to a 19-12 edge after 10 minutes, but Catawba rallied to trim the deficit to 19-18 with 7:10 in the half. Wingate would answer back to lead by 13 in the closing minute of the half before taking a 38-27 lead to the break. Marcus Thompson led Wingate, scoring 12 points and grabbing nine rebounds in the opening half.
Trailing 50-43 with 13:29 to play, Catawba reeled off eight straight points to grab a 51-50 lead on a pair of free throws by Kevin Petty (Sanford, NC). A jumper by Brian Carter (Alexandria, VA) gave the Tribe a 53-51 advantage, but Wingate would score 10 straight points to regain control. The lead ballooned to 18 with just over four minutes to play.
Catawba trimmed the deficit to nine at 78-69 with 2:24 left, but that was as close as the Tribe would get. Petty scored 19 points and dished out nine assists for Catawba, but hit only 6-of-15 shots, including 3-of- 10 from behind the arc. Terrence Hamilton (Dillon, SC) added 16 points, while Carter had 11 and Duke Phipps (Newport News, VA) added 10.
Wingate was led by Lorenza Harrington, who scored 24 points, grabbed 10 rebounds and had eight assists. Keenan Dunn had 18 points, while Thompson finished with 12 points and 10 boards. The Bulldogs held a 53-40 edge on the boards and help force 21 Catawba turnovers.
