Link Improves to 6-0 As Baseball Wins Ninth Straight
BELMONT, NC -- Catawba used an eight-run third inning and went on to defeat host Belmont Abbey in baseball action on Thursday afternoon at Abbey Yard. The win marks the ninth straight for the Catawba Indians, who improve to 25-12. The Crusaders had its seven game winning streak snapped and fell to 25-13.
Catawba took a 3-0 lead in the second inning with Bubba Morris (Spencer, NC) and Chad Baker (Jamestown, NC) collecting RBI singles. The Indians would break the game open in the third. Morris had a two-run single and Lee Page (Dillon, SC) a two-run triple in the frame. Catawba had just four hits in the inning, but drew four walks and had three hit batsmen.
Paul Link (Salisbury, NC) improved to 6-0 as he sailed through five innings, allowing just one hit with four walks. He exited in the sixth after the first four Crusader batters collected hits and got relief help from Blake Ketner (Davidson, NC) and Travis McSweeney (Palm Harbor, FL).
For Belmont Abbey in the sixth, Will Breslin (Daytona Beach, FL) and Seth Waller (Salisbury, NC) led off with doubles and Alex Castellanos (Miami, FL) singled home Waller. Patrick Atwell (China Grove, NC) added a RBI single with two outs and Tyler McKenzie (Winston-Salem, NC) had a two-run single as the Crusaders pulled within 11-5.
Zach Evans (Greensboro, NC) had a leadoff homer for Catawba in the sixth, while Josh Haire (Mooresville, NC) drove home the final run with a RBI single in the bottom of the ninth. Evans and Page each had three hits to pace the Tribe. Castellanos had three hits for the Crusaders.
