White Tops Blue in Football Spring Game
Roach goes 11-of-13 for 116 yards and two scores
SALISBURY, NC -- The White team rallied for a 17-10 win over the Blue in Catawba College’s annual football spring scrimmage game on Saturday afternoon at Shuford Stadium and Kirkland Field. Brent Johnson’s four-yard pass from Brad Roach earlier in the fourth quarter provided the winning margin, while the White used a late defensive stand to preserve the victory.
White got off to a rough start as a bad snap resulted in a fumble on the first play. Marquis Davis recovered for the Blue at the 17-yard-line. Kory Fisher ran in from a yard out for a touchdown. He accounted for the final 15 yards on three carries.
Roach led the White back with an eight-play, 80-yard drive to tie the score. He teamed up with Landon Gouveia on passes of 25 and 28 yards down to the Blue 17. Roach hooked up with Antwan Strong from 14-yards out on the scoring pass.
Each side used long drives to add field goals in the middle quarter. The Blue got a 31-yard field goal from Cory Darnell, to cap a 16-play, 70-yard march, with just 1:18 before the half to take a 10-7 lead. A third-down halfback pass from Fisher to Lee Page for 22 yards kept the drive alive early, while Howard Williamson completed a fourth-down pass to Brandon Bunn to set up the points.
The White moved 50 yards in 13 plays in its first drive of the second half to tie the score on D.J. Gill’s 30-yard field goal. Patrick Dennis had a key 18-yard completion on third down to Strong.
Chris Noel help set up the winning score with an interception near midfield. The White used a pair of third down conversions before the pass from Roach to Johnson. The first was a hookup between Dennis and Antonio Hall for 18 yards to the 25 and the second covered 12 yards to the 10 from Roach to Johnson.
The Blue one final chance after Keith Brown intercepted near midfield and returned it to the White 26 with two minutes to play. Melquan Fair had a sack to move the Blue back near the 40, but Williamson completed passes to Robert Robinson (14 yards) and Bunn (16 yards) to the nine for a first down. Cortez Best broke up the final chance on a fourth-down pass in the end zone.
