Softball Splits Doubleheader With Wingate
SALISBURY, NC -- Catawba and visiting Wingate played to a split of a South Atlantic Conference softball doubleheader on Tuesday afternoon at Whitley Field. Wingate took the opener 7-3, while Catawba won game two 8-5. The Catawba Indians now stand at 36-13 overall and 4-4 in the SAC. The Bulldogs are 29-16 and 4-4.
Jacqueline White (Mt. Ulla, NC) went 4-for-8 in the doubleheader with a pair of RBI for Catawba. Callie Gordy (Oak Ridge, NC) was 3-for-6 with a RBI and stole three bases, breaking the school record with her 18th on the season. Sarah VanBuskirk (Lutz, FL) scored four runs for Catawba in the nightcap. Megan McPhail (Wade, NC) led Wingate, going 5-for-8 with a RBI and four runs scored. Joy Henry (Virginia Beach, VA) was 4-for-7 and scored a run.
The Bulldogs scored six runs in the sixth inning of the opener to take the win. McPhail started the rally with a bad-hop single to third with one out, which was followed by a soft liner to third that was not caught. Another bad-hop single to short loaded the bases and Celina Rocha (Baytown, TX) followed with a single to center that scored a run, while the tying run scored on an error.
Kelsey Emig (Glenmoore, PA) picked up the third infield hit of the inning to give Wingate the lead at 4-3, while Heather Winchester (Waxhaw, NC) added a sacrifice fly and Kimee Lewis (Farmington, UT) a RBI triple. LaRonda McClain (Kings Mountain, NC) singled home the final run.
Catawba had taken the early lead. White doubled home a run in the first and Kathleen Greenhalgh (Gresham, OR) drew a bases-loaded walk in the second. The Bulldogs avoided further trouble in the second, turning a fly ball from White into an inning-ending doubleplay.
Winchester pulled the Bulldogs to within 2-1, scoring on a wild pitch in the third, but Catawba got the run right back on a two-out double by Jenn Mehl (West Creek, NJ). Meredith Harris (Kittrell, NC) earned the win for Wingate, tossing four and two-thirds of shutout relief. She surrendered four hits and struck out three.
Wingate took the early 1-0 lead in the nightcap. McPhail singled with two outs in the first, stole second and scored on a single by Courtney Wagner (Myrtle Beach, SC). Catawba responded with four runs in its second to grab control. Lizz Dunkman (Festus, MO) doubled home a pair of runs, while Gordy and White each drove in a run with two-out singles.
Catawba picked up an unearned run in the third, but Wingate mounted a rally in the fifth which nearly put the Bulldogs on top. McClain and Hallie Pettigrew (Uniontown, OH) led off with bunt singles and McPhail followed with a double. A wild pitch cut the deficit to 5-3 and an error put runners on the corners with one out. Rocha hit a ball to center that hit the top of the fence and bounced back into play, but Henry was forced out at second and the Lady Indians got out of the frame up 5-4.
Ryann Baker (Rockwell, NC) gave Catawba a pair of insurance runs with a two-run homer in the fifth and VanBuskirk connected on a solo shot in the sixth for an 8-4 edge. Wingate loaded the bases in the seventh with one out, but managed only a run as the game ended after an infield single when Henry was tagged out in a run down.
