Sands Swats Three Homers in Baseball's 18-14 Win Over UNC-Pembroke
SALISBURY, NC -- Catawba sophomore Jerry Sands (Clayton, NC) hit three home runs to lead the Indians past visiting UNC-Pembroke 18-14 in baseball action on Tuesday night at Newman Park. The win is the 10th straight for the Catawba Indians, who improve to 26-12. The Braves fall to 22-16.
Josh Bentley (Lenoir, NC) gave UNCP an early 1-0 lead, but Sands connected on a three-run homer in the Tribe first for a 3-1 lead. The Braves would put up five runs in the third with Derek Funk’s (Asheboro, NC) two-run double one of six hits in the frame for UNCP. Sands would drill a two-run homer for Catawba to ignite a six-run third, capped by a two-run single by Chad Baker (Jamestown, NC) as the Indians took a 9-6 edge.
Pembroke came back with five more runs in the fourth, using three Catawba errors and RBI singles by Jason Morales (Fayetteville, NC) Jeff Adams (Laurinburg, NC) Chris Beck (Havelock, NC) and Jay Bowman (Welcome, NC). Catawba tied the game in its fourth at 11-11 on a two-out, two-run double by Bubba Morris (Spencer, NC).
Catawba went on top for good in the fifth on David Thomas’ (Winston-Salem, NC) two-out, two-run double which was followed by a two-run homer by Zach Evans (Greensboro, NC). UNCP climbed within 15-13 in the sixth, but Catawba added a run in the sixth on a Baker triple and two in the seventh on s solo homer by Sands and a two-out double by Morris.
Tim Smith (Walnut Cove, NC) tossed the final inning and a third to register his first save of the season. Alex Fairweather (Lenoir, NC) picked up the win in relief to improve to 6-2. Sands finished with four hits and six RBI for the Indians and tied the school mark with six others with three homers in game. Baker and Morris each had three hits and three RBI. Morales, Adams and Bowman all had three hits for UNC-Pembroke. Beck scored three runs.
