SALISBURY, NC -- Catawba and 16th-ranked Lenoir-Rhyne split a South Atlantic Conference softball doubleheader on Tuesday afternoon at Whitley Field.  The host Lady Indians won the opener 1-0 in nine innings, while Lenoir-Rhyne claimed a 5-2 win in game two.  The Catawba Indians now stand at 39-14 overall and 7-5 in the SAC.  The Bears are 39-8 and 8-4.

Jessie Whitesides (Yadkinville, NC) produced the lone run of the opener with a bases loaded single with no outs in the bottom of the ninth.  Hillary Hampton (Salisbury, NC) opened the inning at second and Jenn Mehl (West Creek, NJ) looped a single over short.  Sarah VanBuskirk (Lutz, FL) drew a walk before Whitesides drove a ball off the fence in right center.

Lindsay Ettinger (Pasadena, MD) picked up the win, tossing the nine-inning shutout.  She allowed eight hits and walked one with 10 strikeouts.  She stranded 11 Bear runners, including eight in scoring position.  Casey Hanes (Richmond, VA) took the loss despite allowing only three hits with a walk and nine strikeouts.

The Bears loaded the bases in the second with one out, but Ettinger struck out the final two batters.  Lenoir-Rhyne had runners on the corners with one out in the third when Ettinger again stuck out the last two hitters.  Hanes took a perfect game into the sixth when VanBuskirk singled with two outs.

Both teams stranded the automatic runner in the eighth after moving the runner to third with one out.  In the ninth, Lenoir-Rhyne got a leadoff single and stolen base by Lindsay Dehart (Graham, NC), but Catawba kept the visitors off the board, aided by a diving play in foul ground with one out by shortstop Kathryn Geouge (Canton, NC).  Catawba would pick up the winning run in its ninth.

The Bears scored an unearned run in the first inning of the second game.  Karie Pushard (Harrisburg, NC) doubled with two outs and Leah Krohn (Taylorsville, NC) singled to score Taylor Queen (Conover, NC), who had reached on a one-out error.  Brittany Cherry (Myrtle Beach, SC) singled home Dehart with two outs in the second and Pushard bounced a ball up the middle to plate Queen in the fifth to give the Bears a 3-0 lead.

Catawba had left the bases loaded in the fourth after drawing three walks and finally got on the board in the fifth as Brittany Thornburg (Kings Mountain, NC) connected on a two-run homer which was the first hit off Bear starter Meredith O’Conner (Charlotte, NC).  Catawba opened the sixth with two singles off Hanes, who began the inning in relief, but the next three batters made outs.

Lenoir-Rhyne picked up a pair of insurance runs in the seventh on solo homers by Pushard and Krohn.  O’Conner claimed the win for LR, allowing just the one hit with four walks and 10 strikeouts.  Hanes did not allow a base runner after surrendering the two hits to open the sixth.  Cherry had two hits in each game for the Bears, while Pushard totaled four hits in the doubleheader.  Pushard and Krohn each had three hits in the nightcap.
