SALISBURY, NC -- Catawba battled to a split of a baseball doubleheader with visiting Mount Olive on Tuesday afternoon at Newman Park.  Catawba rallied for a 9-8 win in the opener, while the 15th-ranked Trojans took game two 5-3.  The Catawba Indians now stand at 28-14, while Mount Olive is 38-11.

Catawba scored six times in the final inning to win the first game.  The Tribe trailed 8-3, but David Thomas (Winston-Salem, NC) started the rally with a two-run homer.  The next three Indians walked and Bubba Morris (Spencer, NC) doubled to cut the deficit to 8-7.  A single by Craig Lyerly (Salisbury, NC) tied the score and Chad Baker (Jamestown, NC) drove home the winning run with a single up the middle.

Morris was a perfect 4-for-4 in the opener, while Lyerly collected three RBI.  Freshman Keith Carrigan (Harrisburg, NC) got his first win after recording the final out in the seventh with the bases loaded.  Stephen Nordin (Angier, NC) had two hits and two RBI for the Trojans and Anthony Williams (Williamston, NC) scored three runs.

Dustin Richardson (Henderson, NC) had a RBI single in the first inning of the nightcap and a second run scored on a doubleplay groundout to stake the Trojans to a 2-0 lead.  Catawba answered with solo homers by Thomas and Jerry Sands (Clayton, NC) to tie the score after an inning.

Mount Olive reclaimed the lead in the sixth on a two-run homer by Erik Lovett (Goldsboro, NC).  Catawba scored a run in the sixth on a groundout by Thomas, but the Trojans went back up by a pair of runs on Nordan’s RBI double in the seventh.

Tom Layne (St. Charles, MO) improved to 7-1 with the win in relief.  He tossed the final two and two-thirds innings and allowed one run on two hits.  Richardson led the Trojans at the plate with three hits.  Zach Evans (Greensboro, NC) had a pair of hits in the nightcap for Catawba.
