Darden's 22 points leads Women's Basketball to rout of Newberry

SALISBURY, NC -- Catawba College placed four players in double figures and held a commanding 57-34 edge on the boards and defeated visiting Newberry 103-51 in South Atlantic Conference women’s basketball action on Saturday afternoon at Goodman Gym. Catawba improves to 19-5 overall and 9-3 in the SAC, winning its fifth straight game, while Newberry falls to 2-22 and 0-12.Newberry scored first on Carlie Smith’s (Clinton, SC) layup 45 seconds into the game, but Catawba would reel off the next 24 points over the next nine minutes and never looked back. Newberry made a brief run to close within 16 at 30-14 with 7:41 in the half, but Catawba would push the lead to 32 near the end of the half. Freshman Isiaette Darden (Wilson, NC) scored 14 of her career-high 22 points in the opening half to spark Catawba. Dorthell Little (Rockingham, NC) added 11 in the opening frame and finished with ninth double-double in the past 10 games with 13 points and 10 boards. Leading 50-23 at the break, Catawba built the lead to 67-31 by the 12:02 mark of the last half and went ahead by 81-40 on a Darden layin with 7:43 remaining. Catawba continue to increase its margin which was the largest at games end. Danyel Locklear (Pembroke, NC) and senior Ella Pasola (Vantaa, FINLAND), playing her final regular season home game, each scored 11. Thirteen of the 14 Catawba players in uniform scored in the game. Smith and Tasha Farmer (McBee, SC) each scored 12 to place Newberry, while Shawanna Cook (Loris, SC) added 10 rebounds. Newberry shot just 30% and committed 37 turnovers. #####
