Softball Swept by Mars Hill to close out SAC regular season
SALISBURY, NC -- Mars Hill swept a South Atlantic Conference softball doubleheader form host Catawba on Saturday afternoon at Whitley Field. The Lady Lions won by the scores of 6-3 and 13-0 to improve to 32-20 overall and 6-8 in the SAC. The Catawba Indians fall to 39-16 and 7-7.
Mars Hill jumped out to a 4-0 lead after a half inning in the opener. Kristina Osborn (Birmingham, AL) put the Lady Lions on the board with a two-out solo homer. After a single and a hit batter, Ashley Harber (Goose Creek, SC) hit a three-run shot that bounced off the top of the fence.
Catawba struck for three in the fifth. Brittany Thornburg (Kings Mountain, NC) led off the frame with a homer and Sarah VanBuskirk (Lutz, FL) added a two-run homer. The Lady Indians were able to put two more runners on with no outs, but failed to tie the score.
Anna James (Bellevue, WA) hit a two-run homer in the sixth to push the Mars Hill advantage to 5-3 and Osborn singled home a run in the seventh. Tiffany Farthing earned the win for Mars Hill, tossing four innings, while Katie Blankenship (Candler, NC) picked up a save, allowing just one hit over the final three innings.
Osborn collected three hits for the Lady Lions in the opener. Christa Fullwood (Wilmington, NC) and James each had two hits. Thornburg had two hits for Catawba. The two homers for Catawba pushed the Lady Indians season total to 51, breaking the league record of 50 set by Wingate last season.
Mars Hill would strike early in game two. Four of the first five batters reached with Tiara Mitchell’s (N. Charleston, SC) bases-loaded single drove in the first run and Harber added a sacrifice fly for a 2-0 lead. Ashley Angell (Winston-Salem, NC) and Fullwood had run-scoring singles in the second as the Lady Lions moved ahead 4-0.
The Lady Lions exploded for five runs in the third. Tiffany Self (Del Rio, TN) connected on a grand slam and Osborn added a RBI double. Harber added a three-run homer in the fifth.
Paige Brantley (Raleigh, NC) tossed the shutout. She allowed five hits with five walks and five strikeouts. Mitchell and Harber each had three hits in the 16-hit Mars Hill attack. Kathryn Geouge (Canton, NC) and Allie Marshall (Pleasant Garden, NC) each had two hits for Catawba.
