Query's Eighth-Inning Single Give Baseball Spilt Against Newberry
Tribe earns #3-seed in next week's tournament
GREENVILLE, SC -- Catawba and Newberry fought to a split of a doubleheader in South Atlantic Conference baseball action on Saturday afternoon at Municipal Stadium. Newberry won the opener 7-4, while Catawba claimed the second game 1-0 in eight innings. The Catawba Indians now stand at 29-16 overall and 12-10 in the SAC, while Newberry is 19-27 and 12-11.
Ryan Query (Kannapolis, NC) delivered a run-scoring single in the eighth inning to plate the lone of the second game to give the Tribe the split. Chad Baker (Jamestown, NC) led off the inning with a single and moved to second on a throwing error before Query stepped in and collected his winning hit.
Blake Ketner (Davidson, NC) tossed the shutout for Catawba, allowing just four hits with a walk and two strikeouts over the eight innings. Newberry managed to get only two runners in scoring position. Brandon Gardner led off the third with a single and was sacrificed to second then in the eighth Clark Mullins led off with a single, was sacrificed to second and went to third on a groundout.
Catawba had left four runners in scoring position over the first seven innings. Query and Bubba Morris (Spencer, NC) each had two hits for Catawba in the nightcap. The win gives Catawba the third seed in next week’s SAC Tournament, which will also be held in Greenville.
Newberry jumped out to a 3-0 lead after an inning of the opener, but Catawba picked up single runs in the second and third frames to cut the deficit to 3-2. A RBI double by Casey Faulkenberry in the fifth pushed the Newberry advantage to 4-2 and the hosts scored three times with two outs in the seventh for a 7-2 edge.
Catawba got a pair of runs back in its eighth on RBI singles by Craig Lyerly (Salisbury, NC) and Baker, but that was a close as the Tribe could get. Paul Link (Salisbury, NC) tossed the complete game for Catawba, allowing five earned runs off nine hits. Catawba collected 15 hits, three each by Lyerly and Kevin McMillan (Salisbury, NC), but stranded 11 on base.
