Hamilton's basket with 0.6 to play lifts Men's Basketball over Newberry
SALISBURY, NC -- Catawba College senior Terrence Hamilton (Dillon, SC) made his final regular season home game memorable as his layup with 0.6 seconds to play lifted Catawba to a 78-77 win over visiting Newberry in South Atlantic Conference menís basketball action on Saturday afternoon at Goodman Gym. With the win, Catawba improves to 18-6 overall and 8-4 in the SAC, while Newberry falls to 3-20 and 1-11.The basket by Hamilton ended a 6-0 run for Catawba over the final minute of the game. Brian Reese (Goose Creek, SC), who had tied the game at 72-72 on a three-pointer with 2:09 left, capped an 8-0 run by Newberry with another three to put the visitors ahead 77-72 with 1:12 remaining.
Duke Phipps (Newport News, VA) hit a pair of free throws with 1:03 to play to close Catawba to within 77-74 and after Reese missed the front end of a one-and-one, Kevin Petty (Sanford, NC) drove in for a layup to cut the margin to 77-76 with seven seconds remaining.
Rashaad Carter (Charleston, SC) missed a one-and-one and Catawba gained control with just over three seconds to play. After a timeout, Brian Carter (Alexandria, VA), inbounding from just across midcourt, lobbed a prefect pass to Hamilton, whose shot bounced around the rim and fell in with just 0.6 seconds to play.
The teams battled through four ties and six lead changes over the opening 10 minutes before Newberry used a 12-5 run which started with a three-pointer by Albert Garrett (Brooklyn, NY) and ended with a three-pointer by Iva Karaga (Zagreb, CROATIA) to give Newberry a 29-23 edge with 6:47 in the half. Newberry led by as many as seven and took a 40-35 lead to the break. Catawba shot just 30.6% in the opening half and were out-rebounded 29-19.
Newberry led by as many as eight in the second half before Catawba rained in four three-pointers over a three minute span to erase a 50-43 deficit and take a 56-52 lead with 9:33 to play. Newberry came back to lead 64-61 with 5:33 remaining after a three-pointer by Zeb Reid (Loganville, GA), but Phipps keyed a 6-0 run with a pair of steals, a layin and an assists to give Catawba a 67-64 lead at the 4:32 mark. Newberry would eventually tie the game on Reeseís three-pointer.
Phipps led Catawba with 18 points, while Hamilton had a double-double with 16 points and 10 rebounds. Petty also scored 16 points for Catawba. Alex Fair (Kershaw, SC) led Newberry with 16 points and 11 rebounds, while Carter also had a double-double with 14 points and 11 boards. Karaga added 11 in a losing effort.
