Whitley Wins 500th Game as Softball Takes Two From Pfeiffer
Lady Indians reach 40 wins for first time
SALISBURY, NC -- Pfeiffer earned a win in completion of a halted game, but Catawba took both ends of the scheduled doubleheader in softball action on Tuesday afternoon at Whitley Field. The Falcons won 6-1 and Catawba took the final two decisions 6-1 and 2-0. The wins improve Catawba to 41-17, while Pfeiffer is now 25-25. The first victory for Catawba in the doubleheader was the 500th win for Nan Whitley as the Catawba softball coach and gave the Lady Indians its first-ever 40-win season.
In the scheduled doubleheader, Catawba broke open a scoreless game in the fourth inning of the first game. Jacqueline White (Mt. Ulla, NC) led off with a double and Kathryn Geouge (Canton, NC) reached on a one-out error. Ryann Baker (Rockwell, NC) followed with a two-run single to give the Lady Indians the early lead.
Geouge singled home a run in the fifth then Pfeiffer got on the board in the sixth, scoring an unearned run on Jaimee Cassidy’s (Brandon, FL) sacrifice fly. Catawba would add three insurance runs in the its sixth on a two-run double by Hillary Hampton (Salisbury, NC) and a RBI double by Jessie Whitesides (Yadkinville, NC).
Catawba collected 11 hits in the win, two each by Whitesides, Geouge and Baker. Lindsay Ettinger (Pasadena, MD) improved to 22-8 with the win on the mound. Pfeiffer had 10 hits, but hit into doubleplays to end each of the first three innings. Stephanie Bethea (Greensboro, NC) and Tiffany Allen (Franklin, NC) each had two hits for the Falcons.
The Lady Indians had just six hits in game two, but four came in the two-run second inning. Hampton delivered a RBI single for the first run and Geouge drew a two-out walk for the final run. Allie Marshall (Pleasant Garden, NC) had two of the hits for Catawba.
Rachel Christian (Buckingham, VA) tossed a five-hit shutout for Catawba and improved to 16-8. Pfeiffer had runners and second and third in the fourth with one out, but the freshman got a fly out then a comebacker after a two-out walk to end the threat.
In the conclusion of the halted game, neither team produced a baserunner, picking up the game with Pfeiffer leading 6-1 in the top of the sixth. The Falcons had scored three unearned runs in the first inning with Jessica Culler (Rural Hall, NC) delivering a key two-run single. Cassidy, who scored on of those runs, also scored in the third and fifth innings.
Culler, Cassidy and Martina Bullard (Godwin, NC) each had two hits for Pfeiffer, while White and Brittany Thornburg (Kings Mountain, NC) had two hits for Catawba. Chelsea Morton (Oakboro, NC) had the win on the mound, tossing all seven innings and allowing just eight hits with no walks and four strikeouts.
