McMillan and Sands Lead Baseball Past Pfeiffer
SALISBURY, NC – Catawba’s Jerry Sands (Clayton, NC) and Kevin McMillan (Salisbury, NC) each collected three hits and had a home run as the Indians topped visiting Pfeiffer 10-5 in baseball action on Tuesday night at Newman Park. The Catawba Indians improved to 30-16, while the Falcons fell to 24-25.
Catawba scored a pair of runs in five different innings to overcome an early 3-0 deficit. Pfeiffer took the quick lead on Hayes Hinson’s (Raleigh, NC) three-run homer in the first inning. McMillan put Catawba on the board with a solo shot in the second, while Matt Kepley (Greensboro, NC) scored on a wild pitch to trip the deficit to 3-2.
The Indians took the lead in the third on a RBI single by McMillan and a RBI grounder by Bubba Morris (Spencer, NC). Sands would connect on a two-run homer in the fourth, while Zach Evans (Greensboro, NC) hit a two-run homer in the sixth.
Pfeiffer pulled within 8-5 in the seventh. Bryan Braxton (Hillsborough, NC) drove home a run with a single and Justin Ridenhour (Concord, NC) hit a sacrifice fly. David Thomas (Winston-Salem, NC) gave the Tribe a pair of insurance runs with a two-run homer in the eighth.
Lee Dupre (Salisbury, NC) tossed five innings to earn the win and improve to 3-1. He allowed seven hits and three runs. Five relievers closed out the contest for the Indians with Evans striking out a pair of batters in the ninth. Hinson and Ridenhour each had two hits for Pfeiffer.
