Softball splits doubleheader at St. Andrews

LAURINBURG, NC -- Catawba College and St. Andrews split a softball doubleheader on Saturday afternoon. Catawba got a shutout from Katie Phelps (Prince Frederick, MD) to win the opener 3-0, but the Knights pulled out the second game 7-6. Catawba is now 3-1 on the season, while St. Andrews is 1-7. Phelps surrendered five hits and struck out three in improving to 2-0 on the season. She got her offensive support in the final inning as Catawba capitalized on a pair of errors to score three unearned runs. Two of the Lady Indians scored on wild pitches and another on an error. Val McDowell (Crofton, MD) collected three of the five Catawba hits in the opener. Both teams scored of its opponents miscues in the second game. The Knight took an early 2-0 lead after an inning, but Catawba kept the game close, scoring twice in its second and another in the third for a 3-3 tie. The Lady Indians trailed 6-4 going into the sixth, then scored twice to again tie the score. St. Andrews got a one-out single from Tina Gonsalves in the sixth to take the game 7-6. In the second game, Jackie Carson (Summerland Key, FL) had a pair of hits and scored two runs. Kari Griffin (Olney, MD) and Rachel McCollum (Yadkinville, NC) had the only RBI in the game. #######
