GREENVILLE, SC -- Jerry Sands (Clayton, NC) tripled home Ryan Query (Kannapolis, NC) with one out in the bottom of the 10th inning to give third-seeded Catawba a 9-8 win over fourth-seeded Lenoir-Rhyne at the 2007 Food Lion South Atlantic Conference Baseball Tournament on Friday afternoon at Memorial Stadium. The Catawba Indians improve to 31-16, while the Bears fall to 35-17. Lenoir-Rhyne will face Tusculum on Friday night with elimination on the line. Catawba will tangle with Carson-Newman in winner’s bracket action on Saturday morning.
Catawba was able to send the game to extra innings after trailing 8-6 in the eighth. The Indians used three walks and a two-out, two-run single by Zach Evans (Greensboro, NC) to tie the contest. Tim Smith (Walnut Cove, NC) shut down the Bears for two innings, allowing just a single run, to pick up the win in relief.
Lenoir-Rhyne fought back from an early 3-1 deficit with a pair of runs in both the fourth and fifth innings for a 5-3 lead. Evan Taylor and Mark Drucker each had RBI doubles for the Bears in the fourth and Dallas Tarleton had a two-run double in the fifth.
Catawba would tie the game in its fifth, but Lenoir-Rhyne scored a pair of unearned runs on a two-run double by Rob Mullin in the seventh to go back on top at 7-5. The Indians loaded the bases in the seventh and cut the deficit to a run on a RBI groundout by Bubba Morris (Salisbury, NC). Taylor McCurdy’s two-out single in the eight gave L-R its 8-6 lead.
McCurdy went a perfect 5-for-5 at the plate for the Bears with Derek Pugh also enjoying a multi-hit game with two hits. Query had three hits and scored three runs for Catawba, while Evans had two hits.
