Baseball Falls Twice, Eliminated From SAC Tournament
GREENVILLE, SC -- Catawba College was bounced out of the 2007 South Atlantic Conference Baseball Tournament with a pair of losses on Saturday afternoon at Municipal Park. The Catawba Indians fell to Carson-Newman 5-4 and to Wingate 6-2. Catawba falls to 31-18 on the season.
Carson-Newman scored four times in the top of the eighth inning to rally for its win. Catawba spotted the Eagles a first-inning run, but took the lead in the bottom of the inning on Jerry Sands’ (Clayton, NC) 20th home run of the season. The round tripper brought home Chad Baker (Jamestown, NC), who singled to open the inning.
The Indians left the bases loaded in the third and two more on in the seventh, but did manage to add a run in the fourth on a triple by Lee Page (Dillon, SC) to go up 3-1. The hit scored Bubba Morris (Spencer, NC), who walked to open the inning, but Page was out after over sliding third.
Blake Ketner (Davidson, NC), who had worked out of a jam in the seventh inning, allowed two singles and a walk to open the eighth. Nick Achberger greeted Matt Seabolt (Asheboro, NC) with a double to tie the score. Aftner an out Jason Gray singled home the go-ahead run and Derek Long added a two-out single to push the lead to 5-3.
Catawba had one last chance in the ninth. Baker led off with a single, his third hit of the game, but the next two batters were retired. David Thomas (Winston-Salem, NC) drew a walk and Zach Evans (Greensboro, NC) singled to cut the lead to a single run. Steve Cishek was able to record a flyout from Brett Hatley (Salisbury, NC) to end the contest.
Thomas joined Baker with three hits for the Tribe, while Evans had two singles. Achberger, Long and Langdon Potts had a pair of hits for the Eagles. Corbin Arial got the win in relief for Carson-Newman. He got the final two outs of the seventh inning. Cishek pitched the final two innings for the save.
Against Wingate, the Bulldogs grabbed a 2-0 lead in the third on a double by Blair Troutman and a sacrifice fly off the bat of Michael Parker. Catawba scratched for single runs in the fourth and sixth to tie the score. Thomas tripled with two outs in the fourth and scored on a single by Evans. Thomas singled home the sixth-inning run, but the Tribe left two runners in scoring position.
Wingate took the lead right back in its half of the sixth. A single, an error and sacrifice put runners on second and third and Shaughn Neal singled to drive both runs home to put the Bulldogs on top for good. Wingate added a pair of insurance runs in the eighth.
Brian Benton picked up the win in relief, allowing just a walk with two strikeouts in an inning and two-thirds of work. He entered to record the final two outs of the sixth inning with runners and first and second. Zak Laws pitched the final two innings to earn the save.
Wingate had 10 hits in the win with Neal, Benton, Troutman and Parker each collecting two. Thomas and Criage Lyerly (Salisbury, NC) had two hits for Catawba. Tim Smith (Walnut Cove, NC) went seven and two-thirds innings and allowed nine hits and four earned runs.
