Schiffel helps Swim team to sixth place; qualifies for NCAA II NationalsJACKSONVILLE, FL -- Senior Melissa Schiffel (Hickory, NC) set two school records, qualified for the NCAA II Nationals and helped the Catawba swim team to a sixth place finish at the Southern States Conference Championships which concluded on Saturday night. The Lady Indians were one of four NCAA II teams competing in the 10 team meet that featured six NCAA I squads.Schiffel, who competed at the NCAA II Nationals as a sophomore, smashed her own school record in the 1650 freestyle to qualify again for Nationals. The senior posted a time of 17:29.35, nearly 30 seconds better than her previous school record, and 15 seconds under the NCAA II qualifying time. The time gave her the individual win in the event and is the second best among NCAA II swimmers this year. She also set a school record in the 500 free with a swim on 5:10.87. She will swim four events at the NCAA II National which will take place in Orlando, FL, on March 13-16, 2002. Catawba opened the meet on Thursday with a seventh place finish in the 200 freestyle relay. The team of Beth Gill (Woodbury, NJ), Ashley Mitchell (Raleigh, NC), Kristen Eastmer (Hamburg, NY) and freshman Kim Elisee (Newcastle, DE) swam a time of 1:45.34, posting the second best time in school history. Schiffel then followed with her record breaking swim in the 500 free. The time placed her fourth in the event. The Lady Indians would also score points the opening night in the 400 medley relay. Elisee, Schiffel, Eastmer and Mitchell swam the second fastest time in school history to finish sixth in 4:16.81. Day two started with a seventh place finish in the 200 medley relay. Elisee, Andrea Brown (Central, SC), freshman Kelly Freeman (Wendell, NC) and Gill posted a time of 2:00.77. Schiffel followed with a third place swim in the 400IM. Her time of 4:36.79 was just over three seconds off the winning time and was just a second off her own school record. Eastmer, a senior, placed 16th in the event with a swim of 5:08.95 in the final. Freshman Christin Bolte (Juniper, FL) was 18th, swimming a time of 5:09.12. Eastmer won the consolation final of the 100 fly, swimming it in the third best Catawba time of 1:03.14. Freeman was just behind Easmer with a time of 1:03.43 to place 10th. Brown just missed making the consolation final in the 100 breaststroke, finishing 20th in a time of 1:17.10. Elisee placed 15th in the 100 back with a swim of 1:03.79. She swam the second best 100 back in Catawba history in the prelims at 1:03.03. The day concluded with the 800 freestyle relay as the Lady Indian team of Schiffel, Eastmer, Bolte and Mitchell earned a fifth place finish with a time of 8:27.56, second best in school history. The outstanding day for Catawba moved the squad from ninth place to sixth, entering the final day. Schiffel started the third day with the win in the 1650 free. Three others earned points in the event as Bolte finished 12th (19:12.61), Laurielle Bishop (Newport News, VA) placed 15th (21:12.64) and Caitlin Koukal (Sanbornville, NH) was 16th (23:20.64). Elisee would follow with a win in the consolation final of the 200 backstroke with a time of 2:14.17 for ninth place. Brown and Rebecca Poates (Richmond, VA) just missed the consolation final in the 200 breaststroke. Brown was 17th (2:49.79), while Poates finished 18th in a time of 2:51.59. The Lady Indians placed two swimmers in the consolation final of the 200 fly. Freeman finished 11th in a time of 2:20.19, while Eastmer placed 12th with a swim of 2:23.24. Catawba finished seventh in the final event, the 400 free relay. Gill, Mitchell, Elisee and Schiffel swam to a time of 3:53.28. FINAL STANDINGS 1. North Florida - 753 2. Tampa - 569 3.
