Green Tallies Five Points, But Lacrosse Falls 14-8 at St. Andrews
LAURINBURG, NC -- St. Andrews held off a fourth-quarter Catawba rally to claim a 14-8 win in lacrosse action on Tuesday afternoon at Knights Field. The Knights improve to 12-5, while the Catawba Indians fall to 6-8.
St. Andrews scored the only two goals of the first quarter then Cole Howell (St. Albert, ALB, CANADA) scored three second-quarter goals to give the Knights an 8-2 lead at the half. Nick Desper (Carrboro, NC) opened the second half with a goal for Catawba, but Howell capped a three-goal run by the Knights with his fourth goal of the game to give St. Andrews an 11-3 edge after three quarters.
Catawba would make a little noise in the final quarter. Wayne Carbiener (Orlando, FL) and Sean Duggan (Wantagh, NY) scored in the opening minutes of the quarter and Kurt Green (San Diego, CA) had a pair of goals after a St. Andrews tally to bring the Tribe within 12-7 with 3:38 remaining. That would be as close as Catawba would get as the Knights scored two of the final three goals.
Zach Mryncza (Baltimore, MD) had a pair of goals and three assists to lead the Knights with five points. Dab Hartzell (Lancombe, ALB, CANADA) followed Howell with three goals. Green had five points for Catawba on three goals and two assists. Duggan had two goals, while Carbiener, Desper and Mike Dolesh (Aquasco, MD) each had a goal and an assist.
The Knights helped control play by winning 15-of-25 face-offs and held a 41-32 edge in shots. Nate Hull (Millersville, MD) made 12 saves in goal for St. Andrews, while Ben Huber (Westminster, MD) stopped eight shots for Catawba.
