Seniors Help Baseball to Win in Final Game

SALISBURY, NC -- Catawba closed out its 2007 baseball season with a 16-12 win over visiting Erskine on Monday night at Newman Park.  Three Indian seniors, Zach Evans (Greensboro, NC), Paul Link (Cleveland, NC) and Brian Sommer (New Port Richey, FL), played their final game and each contributed to the win that lifted Catawba to a 32-19 record.  The Flying Fleet fell to 36-24.

Erskine took a 2-0 lead in the second on solo home runs by Matt Schneider (Greenville, SC) and Greg Huff (McDonogh, GA).  Sommer would start a three-run second for the Tribe with a one-out homer.  Craige Lyerly’s (Salisbury, NC) two-run homer put Catawba on top 3-2.

A groundout by Huff in the fourth tied the score, but Chad Baker (Jamestown, NC) put Catawba on top to stay with a three-run homer in the Indian fourth.  Ryan Query (Kannapolis, NC) pushed the lead to 10-3 with a fifth-inning grand slam.

Catawba would grab a 15-5 lead as it tacked on five runs in the sixth.  Sommer had a two-run double, Jared Temple (Durham, NC) a RBI triple and Baker connected on his second homer of the night.  Erskine struck for four in the seventh to pull within 15-9 on solo homers by Schneider and Keith Hill (Abbeville, SC) and a two-run error.

The Flying Fleet added two more runs in the eighth on a sacrifice fly by Chas Anthony (Pickens, SC) and a single by Schneider to cut the deficit to 15-11, but Zeb Link (Woodleaf, NC) doubled home a run for Catawba in the eighth and Evans and Matt Seabolt (Asheboro, NC) closed out the ninth.

Sommer had two hits and three RBI in his final game, while Evans had a hit, scored a run and picked up a pair of outs on the mound in the ninth, including a strikeout to his last batter.  Link pitched the win to improve to 7-1.  He allowed six runs on nine hits with five strikeouts over six and a third innings.

Baker had three hits and four RBI to pace Catawba, while Lyerly had three hits and scored three runs.  Seabolt struck out the final batter to earn his second save.  Schneider went 4-for-5 with three RBI and scored four runs for Erskine.  Huff had three hits and five RBI.

During the last four seasons, Catawba won three South Atlantic Conference Championships and appeared in two NCAA II South Regional Tournaments.  The Indians posted a 156-69 record (.693), including two 40-win seasons and a record 47 wins in 2006.
