Softball drops pair to Belmont AbbeySALISBURY, NC -- Catawba College dropped both ends of a softball doubleheader to visiting Belmont Abbey on Thursday afternoon at Whitley Field. The Crusaders took the opener 8-2, then held off Catawba to take the second game 5-3. Catawba falls to 4-3-1 on the season, while Belmont Abbey improves to 5-5.Belmont Abbey took full advantage of five Lady Indian miscues in the opener as five of the eight runs were unearned. Four straight hits to open the first inning led to three runs and the Crusaders were never headed. Down 5-0, Catawba did cut the deficit to 5-2 in its third on a RBI single by Cari Griffin (Olney, MD) and a bases loaded walk with two outs by Liz Corbett (Severn, MD). The Crusaders padded their lead with a run in the fifth on a single by Nicki Clevenger (Lutz, FL) and two more in the seventh. Amanda Dunkin (Tampa, FL) had four hits for Belmont Abbey in the opener, while Clevenger had three hits and two RBI. Melissa Barrett (York, SC) had two hits and scored four runs to help back the complete game by Patricia Taylor (Frederick, MD),who allowed just six hits and no earned runs, while striking out six. The Lady Indians trailed 4-0, three scoring off Catawba errors, heading into the sixth, but rallied for three runs. Katie Phelps (Prince Frederick, MD) drove home two with a ringing double off the outfield fence and Shannon Handy (Advance, NC) drove home another on a ground out. Belmont Abbey added another unearned run in the seventh on a RBI by Taylor. Catawba got the tying run to the plate in the seventh, but ended the game as shortstop Clevenger made a great stop on a line drive for the final out. Dunkin had two hits, scored a pair of runs and drove hame another for the Crusaders. Lindsay Henson had three hits and Taylor earned the save, allowing just one hit over the final two innings after Belmont Abbey starter Emily Arthur (Boiling Springs, NC) got into trouble. Jessica Rivera (Key West, FL) was 3-for-4 with a triple in the second game after leading the way with two hits in the opener. Jackie Carson (Summerland Key, FL), who hit into the final out, had two hits in the game. Phelps pitched well over five innings for Catawba, allowing just one earned run. #######
