Sutton Named SAC Football Defensive Player of the Week
ROCK HILL, SC -- The South Atlantic Conference has announced its football Players of the Week for the week ending August 25, 2007. Catawba freshman defensive lineman Brandon Sutton (Snow Hill, NC) was named the Defensive Player of the Week, while Wingate claimed the other two positions, junior quarterback JD Moore (Gastonia, NC) on Offense and junior wide receiver Kameron Kranz (Scottsdale, AZ) on Special Teams.
Sutton had an impressive debut as a true freshman. Sutton and his Catawba teammates spotted Chowan a touchdown before scoring 55 unanswered points in a 55-7 road victory Saturday afternoon. The Greene Central High School graduate racked up a pair of sacks and three stops for losses Saturday. The Catawba defense held Chowan to 168 yards and only 20 yards on the ground. One of Sutton's sacks resulted in a TD as he caused a fumble that was recovered in the end zone for a 42-7 halftime lead. On the afternoon, Sutton had five total tackles and one quarterback hurry.
In his first collegiate start, Moore was 15-for-27 for 236 yards and two touchdown passes in a 34-26 victory over Fayetteville State. A Forestview High School product, Moore was nine-of-11 for 178 yards and one score after halftime. Moore's efforts helped Wingate rally from a 13-10 halftime deficit.
Kranz also made a splashy debut for the Bulldogs, as he compiled 268 all-purpose yards during Wingate's victory. A transfer, Kranz returned five kick-offs for 166 yards and three punts for 60 yards. He caught three passes for 34 yards and one TD and added one rush for eight yards.
The SAC Football Players of the Week are selected by a vote of the league's sports information directors.
