Men's Soccer Drops Season Opener in Overtime
MISENHEIMER, NC -- Mario Garcia scored with 20 seconds left in the first overtime to give host Pfeiffer a 2-1 win over Catawba in men’s soccer action on Tuesday afternoon. The Falcons improve to 2-1 on the season, while the Catawba Indians fall in their opener.
Catawba scored in the first half and held the lead until the final twenty minutes when Pfeiffer tied the score setting up the exciting finish. Senior Troy Brown (Burlington, NC/Williams HS) scored in the 27th minute to give Catawba a 1-0 lead.
Tyler Held (Virginia Beach, VA/Kellam HS) kept the Tribe on top early in the second half with a nice deflection over the bar in the 54th minute. The Falcons would get the tying goal in the 72nd minute as Matt Harris collected a deflection off a Catawba defender and slipped the ball past Held.
Andrew Landry (Oshawa, Ontario, CANADA/Donevan Inst.) nearly put the Tribe back on top two minutes later, but Falcon goalie Alex Moreno made the save to keep the game tied. Both teams fought hard in overtime but with time running out in the first overtime Garcia broke free to give Pfeiffer the win.
