Reynolds leads Baseball over Shippensburg

SALISBURY, NC -- Junior Blair Reynolds (King, NC) hit two home runs and had five RBI to help Catawba College to an 11-5 win over visiting Shippensburg in a slugfest at Newman Park on Sunday afternoon. The teams combined for 30 hits on the afternoon with the Indians pounding out 17 hits in improving to 6-4. The Raiders, ranked 30th in NCAA II fell to 1-5. Reynolds got Catawba started in the opening inning, getting hit by a pitch with one out. Chad Hill (Bennett, NC) followed with a double and both scored on one of four hits from Spence Southard (Greensboro, NC). Shippensburg would scored five runs over the middle inning, but Catawba would answer each time. Brett Brobston (Yorktown, VA) drove home the initial run for the Builders in the fourth and tied the game in the fifth on a RBI single by Matt DeSanto (Williamsport, PA) and a sacrifice fly by Todd Day (Williamsport, PA). Reynolds had scored on an error in Catawba's half of the fourth, but the Tribe erupted for five runs in the fifth. The Indians collected four consecutive hits to open the fifth inning, taking the lead on Matt Smith's (Browns Summitt, NC) home run. Reynolds capped the inning with the first of his two home runs, a three run shot with two outs. DeSanto homered for Shippensburg in the seventh to bring the Builders within 8-5, but Reynolds connected for a two-run home run in the Tribe seventh and Southard had a RBI single later in the frame. Reynolds was 3-for-5 with five RBI and four runs scored to lead the offense. He raised his season average to .405 and he now has 18 runs and 12 RBI in 10 games. Southard enjoyed a 4-for-5 day with three RBI and a double, while Israel Morrow (Claremont, NC) collected three hits to close with 14 of Greg Payne's school record of 210 career hits.
