Volleyball Picks Up Three Wins at FMU Invitational
FLORENCE, SC – Catawba’s volleyball team won three of its four matches at the FMU Invitational over the weekend at the Smith University Center. The Catawba Indians stand at 7-1 on the young campaign.
On Friday, Catawba suffered its first loss as West Georgia rallied to take the final three games in a 26-30, 26-30, 30-23, 30-23 and 15-11 victory. The Lady Indians rebounded with a four-game win over Glenville State, taking the match by the scores of 30-20, 30-21, 29-31 and 30-26. Saturday, Catawba posted a four-game win over USC-Aiken (30-20, 18-30, 30-21, 30-26) and claimed a five-game thriller over host Francis Marion, winning 36-38, 37-35, 30-32, 30-25 and 15-10.
Junior Melissa Powers (Bennett, NC/N. Moore HS) continued her outstanding play as she recorded 84 kills in the four matches. Her 31 kills against Francis Marion is second in school history as only Erin Ryan had more with 36 back in 1994. Powers had 24 kills and five blocks in the loss to West Georgia and seven blocks against Glenville State.
Senior setter Andi Henderson (Swansboro, NC/Swansboro HS) averaged over 13 assists per game, registering 209 for the tournament. Her 72 assists against FMU tied for the third best total in school history. Henderson had 66 assists in the loss to West Georgia.
Powers and Melissa Griffith (Williamsburg, VA/Lafayette HS) were named to the all-tournament team. Griffith had 62 kills and 89 digs over four matches. She had 25 kills and 25 digs in the win over Francis Marion.
