Football Takes Mayor's Cup With 46-7 Win Over Livingstone

SALISBURY, NC -- Catawba grabbed a 33-0 halftime lead and went on to take a 46-7 victory over visiting Livingstone in football action on Saturday night at Shuford Stadium and Kirkland Field.  The 21st-ranked Catawba Indians improve to 3-0, while the Blue Bears fall to 0-2.  It marked the eight win for Catawba in the battle for the Mayor’s Cup.

Catawba scored on its first five possessions and added an 82 yards interception return by Charlie Walker (Columbus, GA/Hardaway HS) for a 40-7 edge midway through the third quarter.  The Indians got short scoring runs from Kory Fisher (New Bern, NC/New Bern HS) and George Bell (Fayetteville, NC/Britt HS) for a 13-0 lead after a quarter then used the big plays in the second quarter to pull away.

Brad Roach (Williamston, NC/Williamston HS) connected with Antwan Strong (Charlotte, NC/W. Charlotte HS) on a 36-yard strike and following Walker’s interception return, Roach threw a 54-yard pass to Brent Johnson (Hickory, NC/Hickory HS).

Steven Williams (Decatur, GA) guided Livingstone to its lone score on the opening possession of the second half.  Delric Ellington (Charlotte, NC/Vance HS) caught a 31-yard pass from Williams and later ran for 31 yards on a fake punt to put the ball at the Tribe 16.  Dante ‘Daye (Burlington, NC/Cummings HS) finished the drive on a 11-yard reception on a pass from Williams.

Bell added a second score in the third quarter and Jamelle Cuthbertson (Charlotte, NC/Harding HS) matched Bell’s five-yard run early in the fourth for the 46-7 margin.  Cuthbertson (59 yards) and Bell (57 yards) led a Catawba ground attack that rolled up 183 yards.

Roach completed eight of his 16 attempts for 170 yards and two scores, while Johnson returned from an injury to catch three passes for 93 yards in his first outing of the season.  Livingstone was held to 81 yards on the ground with Williams completing 14-of-29 passes for 87 yards, while running for an additional 22.  Ellington caught five passes for 43 yards.
