Volleyball Moves to 11-1 Behind Powers and Griffith

SAVANNAH, GA – Catawba finished off a perfect weekend with two more wins in Saturday’s action at the Chatham Orthopedic Volleyball Classic hosted by Armstrong Atlantic.  The Catawba Indians posted wins over Francis Marion and Puerto Rico-Rio Piedras to improve to 11-1 on the season.

The ladies claimed a win in four games over Francis Marion, taking the match by the scores of 30-24, 26-30, 30-27 and 30-25.  Melissa Powers (Bennett, NC/N. Moore HS) and Melissa Griffith (Williamsburg, VA/Lafayette HS) each tallied 18 kills in the win.  Powers added nine blocks, while Griffith had 28 digs.  Freshman Lindsey Spears (Virginia Beach, VA/Ocean Lakes HS) picked up eight kills and six blocks.

In a first-ever win over PR-Rio Piedras, Catawba earned the sweep with a 32-30, 30-22 and 32-30 victory.  Powers put down 21 kills with Griffith adding 11 kills and 25 digs.  Setter Andi Henderson (Swansboro, NC/Swansboro HS) had 46 assists and 11 digs.
