Dunshie's Penalty Kick Salvages Draw for Women's Soccer at Newberry
NEWBERRY, SC -- Catawba and host Newberry battled to a 1-1 tie in South Atlantic Conference women’s soccer action on Saturday afternoon at the Newberry Soccer Complex. The Catawba Indians now stand at 3-2-1 overall and 0-0-1 in the SAC, while Newberry is 2-1-4 and 1-0-1.
Newberry snapped a scoreless tie in the 54th minute when Adriana Farfan (West Palm Beach, FL) was able to connect on a header off a throw in by Sarah Barnes (Rolla, MO). Catawba keeper Kathleen Blake (Greensboro, NC/NW Guilford HS) came out to play the throw, but was unable to clear it giving Farfan an open look at the goal.
Catawba pulled even in the 67th minute when freshman Andrea Dunshie (Apex, NC/SE Raleigh HS) was fouled in the penalty box. Dunshie took the kick and beat Newberry goalie Danielle Beckerle (St. Louis, MO) to the top right corner.
Newberry had two chances to grab the lead back in the 72nd minute, but Najla Bubtana (Miami, FL) had a shot off the post and Farfan hit the crossbar on the rebound. In the overtime periods both sides played strong but neither offense could get themselves into a position to get the winning goal. The game ended in a 1-1 tie.
“I thought we worked exceptionally hard for each other tonight against a team we consider to be a very strong conference opponent,” stated Catawba coach John Cullen. “I was proud of the team to come from a goal down on the road in the first conference game with so many young players on the field. I was also very proud of Andrea [Dunshie], who stepped up to take a crucial penalty kick with us trailing at the time. Overall, we worked very hard to stay in the game against a strong Newberry team and got a positive result in our opening conference game.”
