Villiard Brothers Spark Men's Soccer to Overtime Win
PEMBROKE, NC -- Catawba got two goals each from Ryan and Chad Villiard (Holiday FL/Mitchell HS) and defeated host UNC Pembroke 5-4 in overtime in men’s soccer action on Saturday night at the Varsity Grounds. The win improves the Catawba Indians to 3-4, while the Braves fall to 1-5.
Ryan Villiard was able to tie the score at 4-4 on his second goal in the 66th minute and Chad Villiard notched his second goal just over 12 minutes into extra time to give the Tribe its 5-4 lead. The brothers had put the Indians up 2-0 in the opening 12 minutes.
UNC Pembroke tied the score in the 25th minute, but Kyle Jones (Tallahassee, FL/Maclay School) gave Catawba a 3-2 lead at the break with his tally in the 43rd minute. The Braves rallied early in the second half as Zach Rowell tied the contest in the 56th minute and Thomas Morrow collected his second of the night on the hour to put UNCP up 4-3.
Ryan Villard would even the match on a feed from Garth McCormack (Charlotte, NC/C. Cabarrus HS), while Chad Villiard redirected a free kick from David Bloom (Marietta, GA/Lassiter HS) for the game-winner. Tyler Held (Virginia Beach, VA/Kellam HS) made four saves for the Tribe in the opening 64 minutes, while Ross Willard (Jacksonville, NC/Jacksonville HS) recorded a pair of saves in keeping UNCP off the board over the final 38 minutes.
