Volleyball Picks Up Win Over Lenoir-Rhyne in Four Games
SALSIBURY, NC -- Catawba picked up a win over visiting Lenoir-Rhyne in four games in South Atlantic Conference volleyball action on Tuesday night at Goodman Gym. The Catawba Indians won by the scores of 30-27, 27-30, 30-23 and 30-27 to improve to 14-2 overall and 2-1 in the SAC. The Bears fall to 10-8 and 0-2.
Junior Melissa Powers (Bennett, NC/N. Moore HS) led Catawba with 23 kills and added six blocks. Mai Zoua Lo (Hickory, NC/Foard HS), Melissa Griffith (Williamsburg, VA/Lafayette HS) and Andi Henderson (Swansboro, NC/Swansboro HS) also posted double-doubles. Lo had 14 kills and 10 digs, Griffith had 10 kills and 15 digs and Henderson dished out 50 assists with 10 digs.
For the Bears, Abby Smith (Virginia Beach, VA) had 15 kills, while Jordan Ledford (Newton, NC) added a dozen kills and 24 digs. Caroline Albertelli (Plantation, FL) picked up 11 kills and four blocks.
Powers helped jump start Catawba in the opening game with three early kills and with an ace by Tiffany Andrassy (Raleigh, NC/Sanderson HS) the Lady Indians led 6-1. Powers added two more kills for a 9-5 edge, but Albertelli had a kill and consecutive aces to tie the game at 10-10. Catawba would use a pair of kills by Lo and another by Griffith to ease back on top at 20-16. The Bears would pull within 28-26, but kills by Griffith and Katie Moran (Northville, MI/Northville HS) closed out the game.
Smith and Kassi Henry (Denver, NC) each had a pair of kills in game two for Lenoir-Rhyne to help put the guests up 8-3. The Bears would take a 20-12 edge before Catawba made a run to tie the score at 27-27. A service error and two kills by Smith gave the game to Lenoir-Rhyne.
Catawba recorded six of its 14 blocks in the third game with Powers and Lindsey Spears (Virginia Beach, VA/Ocean Lakes HS) each recording four. The Lady Indians stretched a 12-10 lead to 26-17 and won easily. Catawba looked to do the same in the final game, bolting to a 17-9 lead, but the Bears rallied back. Ledford had a kill and an ace to get LR to within 17-15 and Catherine Fulton (Hendersonville, NC) had two aces in a five-point run the put the Bears up 24-23. Powers had consecutive kills to put Catawba up 27-26 and Nikki Bozick (Boca Raton, FL/W. Boca HS) an ace for a 29-26 edge. Powers would kill off the final point.
