Men's Soccer Shuts Out Mars Hill in SAC Opener
SALISBURY, NC -- Catawba opened its South Atlantic Conference schedule with a 2-0 victory over visiting Mars Hill in men’s soccer action on Wednesday night at Frock Field. The Catawba Indians improve to 4-4 overall and 1-0 in the SAC, while the Lions fall to 5-3 and 0-2.
Ryan Villiard (Holiday, FL/Mitchell HS) gave Catawba the lead in the 16th minute. The senior beat the wall on a free kick with a shot that glanced just off the inside of the left post and into the net. Catawba had several chances to add to its lead in the first half. Villiard had another shot just wide, while Sam Ketner (Salisbury, NC/E. Rowan HS) hit the post and Andrew Landry (Oshawa, Ontario, Canada/Donevan Institute) fired the rebound wide of the open goal.
Catawba held an 8-2 edge in shots in the opening stanza, but Daniel Waymont (Winchester, England) had two shots for Mars Hill in the opening 15 minutes of the final half. He had the best chance to tie the score with a shot off the crossbar in the 83rd minute. Mars Hill keeper Sean Merfeld (Alpharetta, GA) kept the margin at one goal with a diving save off the foot of Villiard in the 70th minute.
The Indians would get their insurance goal as Landry, who had missed on four outstanding chances, finally found the net with just over five minutes remaining. He settled a clear just outside the box and ripped from 20 yards out. Sophomore Ross Willard (Jacksonville, NC/Jacksonville HS) had three saves in posting his first career shutout. Merfeld had four saves for the Lions.
