Volleyball Falls to Wingate in Three Games
SALSIBURY, NC -- Wingate claimed a win over host Catawba in three games in South Atlantic Conference volleyball action on Friday night at Goodman Gym. The Bulldogs won by the scores of 30-28, 30-28 and 30-16 to improve to 14-1 overall and 3-0 in the SAC. The Catawba Indians fall to 14-3 and 2-2.
Rachelle Rostas (Charlotte, NC) led Wingate with 14 kills, while Heather Mykelbust (Sugar Land, TX) added 12 and Rebecca Bloemer (Louisville, KY) 10 in the win. Melissa Powers (Bennett, NC/N. Moore HS) had a dozen kills to lead Catawba with Melissa Griffith (Williamsburg, VA/Lafayette HS) added 10.
The opening game went back-and-forth with 11 ties and eight lead changes. With the game tied at 26-26, a Bloemer kill and a Catawba attack error gave the Bulldogs a 28-26 lead. Powers put down one of her nine kills in the first game to pull the Lady Indians within a point, but Bloemer followed with a kill for a 29-27 edge. Griffith again got Catawba back within a point, but a serving error gave Wingate the final point.
Game two was also tight throughout. Catawba held an early 13-10 lead, but Wingate surged in front at 20-16 on a run of points off the serve of Amanda Siegrist (Wexford, PA), which included an ace. Down 26-21, the Lady Indians got within 29-28 at the end, but Stormi Gale (Richmond, TX) had a kill to close out the game.
Catawba would lead early in the final game at 4-0, but after a kill by Rostas the Bulldogs added six more points off the serve of Melissa DeLuca (Bahama, NC) for a 7-4 edge. Rostas and Kathryn Reddick (Franklinton, NC) each had two kills in that run. Wingate never looked back after that, extending its lead to 20-11 and then scored the final seven points, two on aces by Myklebust.
DeLuca had 41 assists and 15 digs for Wingate with Siegrist tallying 16 digs. Reddick had four blocks and Gale three. Andi Henderson (Swansboro, NC/Swansboro HS) had 30 assists and five kills, while Jasmine Chunn (East Bend, NC/Forbush HS) had four blocks. Nikki Bozick (Boca Raton, FL/W. Boca HS) led Catawba with 16 digs with Griffith adding 15.
