Beshk Scores Twice as Women's Soccer Rallies For Win

MARS HILL, NC -- Sophomore Alexandra Beshk (Mission Viejo, CA/Mission Viejo HS) scored a pair of goals as Catawba rallied for a 3-2 win over host Mars Hill in South Atlantic Conference women’s soccer action at Meares Stadium on Friday night.  The Catawba Indians improve to 4-2-2 overall and 1-0-1 in the SAC, while the Lions fall to 4-5 and 0-2.

Mars Hill had rallied from a 1-0 halftime deficit with two goals in the first 15 minutes of the second half.  Abby Martin scored just five minutes into the final stanza and Caity Murnahan put the Lions up one goal as she converted a penalty kick just before the hour.

Catawba answered the penalty a minute and half later as senior Lauren Whiteley (Greensboro, NC/SE Guilford HS) found the net from 25 yards out to even the match.  The game remained tied until the 87th minute when Beshk knocked home a rebound from a shot from Lindsey Hinkle (Highland, MD/River Hill HS).  Beshk had put Catawba on top 1-0 with a goal just nine minutes into the match.

Kathleen Blake (Greensboro, NC/NW Guilford HS) recorded seven save in goal for Catawba.  Claudia Cala also made even stops for Mars Hill.

We are extremely pleased of the girls tonight,” said Catawba coach John Cullen.  “To go on the road in the conference, take the lead, then fall behind, they showed great resilience and character to stay with the game plan.  Tonight was a very good step forward for out young team, especially in regards to character.”
