Volleyball Sweeps Past Pfeiffer, Tops Falcons for 34th Straight Time
SALSIBURY, NC -- Catawba downed visiting Pfeiffer in three games in volleyball action on Saturday afternoon at Goodman Gym. The Catawba Indians won by the scores of 30-25, 30-19 and 30-23 to win their 34th straight meeting with the Falcons. The Lady Indians improve to 15-3, while Pfeiffer falls to 10-6.
Junior Melissa Powers (Bennett, NC/N. Moore HS) posted 18 kills and added three blocks for Catawba, while senior setter Andi Henderson (Swansboro, NC/Swansboro HS) dished out 48 assists and added six kills, six digs, two blocks and an ace. Lauren Elmore (Chapel Hill, NC) led Pfeiffer with 13 kills.
Catawba led for most of game one and pulled out to a 24-17 edge after a pair of kills by Mai Zoua Lo (Hickory, NC/Foard HS). Pfeiffer would rally, scoring four straight points, including an ace from Morgan Liebert (Huntersville, NC), but Catawba held at least a three-point edge the rest of the way.
The Lady Indians took an early 10-6 lead in the second game and would build its edge to 24-11 following a 9-2 run that included three kills from Melissa Griffith (Williamsburg, VA/Lafayette HS) and two more by Powers. Pfeiffer hit just 5% in the game two loss, while Catawba hit at 39%, its lowest of the three games.
Pfeiffer stayed close most of the final game, pulling within 18-16 on an ace by Petra Ljubicic (Asheboro, NC). Leading 23-20, Catawba got a kill and an ace from Henderson to go up 25-20 and went on to end the game on consecutive kills by Powers.
Lo and Griffith also reached double figures in kills for Catawba, adding 12 and 11, respectively. Nikki Bozick (Boca Raton, FL/W. Boca HS) registered 17 digs. The Lady Indians hit at 42.7% for the match. Liebert had 32 assists, 10 digs and five kills for Pfeiffer, while Brittany Dickens (Wake Forest, NC) added seven kills and three blocks.
