Men's Soccer Wins Fourth Straight Topping Shepherd 2-1
SALISBURY, NC -- Catawba built a two-goal lead and held off visiting Shepherd for a 2-1 win in men’s soccer action on Sunday afternoon at Frock Field. The Catawba Indians improve to 5-4, while the Rams fall to 4-5.
Catawba took the lead with just a minute left in the initial half as senior Nick Denton (Concord, NC/Robinson HS) tallied his first career goal. Senior Nathan Brown (Huntersville, NC/Hopewell HS) added to the lead in the 72nd minute as he chipped the keeper with a shot the hit the crossbar and came down just over the line.
Shepherd pulled within a goal with just over six minutes remaining. Duncan Williams (Falling Waters, WV) had a shot saved by Tribe keeper Ross Willard (Jacksonville, NC/Jacksonville HS), but the rebound went to Leighton Meredith (Clarendon, JAMAICA), who struck for his fourth of the year.
Williard made three saves for Catawba. Wagner Dacosta (Santos, BRAZIL)made five saves for the Rams, including a kick save on a breakaway shot by Troy Brown (Burlington, NC/Williams HS) to keep the score at the time at 1-0.
