Carson's home run highlights Softball sweep of Wheeling Jesuit

SALISBURY, NC -- Catawba College swept a softball doubleheader from visiting Wheeling Jesuit on Tuesday afternoon at Whitley Field. The Lady Indians won by the scores of 4-0 and 4-2 to improve to 6-3-1 on the season. Catawba used a pair of two-out hits to plate its four runs in the opener. In the first inning, Liz Corbett Severn, MD) tripled home two runs, while Jackie Carson (Summerland Key, FL) connected for a two-run homer in the fifth. It was the first home run for Catawba since Jennifer Pittman homered in the final regular season game of the 1999 season, April 18, 1999. The four runs were more than enough offense for starter Katie Phelps (Prince Frederick, MD). The freshman allowed just one hit and walked one, while striking out eight in improving her mark to 4-1. Tara Rosepapa singled with one out in the fifth to break up the no hitter. Keisha Jones was the only other baserunner as she walked in the first. Neither runner advanced past first base. In the second game, Catawba took the lead with a pair of runs in the second. Shannon Handy (Advance, NC) plated a run on a grounder and later scored on a run down. Jen Ropp (Broadway, VA) drove home a run in the third, while Jess Gimbel (King George, VA) scored on an error in the fourth. The Cardinals finally got on the board in the final inning of the last game. Jessica Mercer tripled home a run with two outs and scored on a single by Katie Donovan. Freshman Megan Wilson (Stuart, VA) improved to 2-0 with the complete game win in the nightcap. She scattered eight hits with a walk and three strikeouts. Gimbel had a pair of doubles to lead the offense, while Ropp also had a pair of hits. #######
