Henderson and Powers Lead Volleyball to Sweep at LMU
HARROGATE, TN -- Catawba swept host Lincoln Memorial in South Atlantic Conference volleyball action on Friday night at Turner Arena. The Catawba Indians won by the scores of 30-28, 30-27 and 30-21, improving to 17-3 overall and 3-2 in the SAC. The Lady Railsplitters fall to 13-7 and 2-2.
Catawba rallied from a 15-11 deficit in the opening game. Mai Zoua Lo (Hickory, NC/Foard HS) had two kills and a combo block in a seven-point run that gave the Lady Indians an 18-15 edge. Lincoln Memorial regrouped and built a 25-21 advantage as Amanda Horenkamp had four kills in the 11-3 surge. Four LMU errors and two kills by Jasmine Chunn (Yadkinville, NC/Forbush HS) brought Catawba even at 27-27. A block by Chunn put Catawba on top at 28-27, while Lo and Melissa Powers (Bennett, NC/N. Moore HS) killed off the final two points.
Lincoln Memorial jumped out to a 9-0 edge in game two, but Catawba would storm back. Down 13-6, the Lady Indians reeled off six straight points to pull within 13-12, getting three kills and a combo block from Powers. Two more kills by Powers and one from Andi Henderson (Swansboro, NC/Swansboro HS) gave Catawba a 20-19 lead. Ashley Knight gave LMU a 21-20 lead, but three straight kills by Powers put Catawba on top 24-21. The Lady Indians stayed on top from there and closed the game on a kill by Powers, who recorded 11 in game two.
Two early kills by Melissa Griffith (Williamsburg, VA/Lafayette HS) and an ace by Henderson helped Catawba turn a 6-4 deficit into an 8-6 lead. A five-point run for the Lady Indians, which included two kills by Powers and an ace by Nikki Bozick (Boca Raton, FL/W. Boca HS) gave Catawba a 22-18 edge. Powers added three kills and Henderson two as Catawba closed the match on a 7-1 run.
Powers paced Catawba with 25 kills and added four blocks. Henderson turned in an all-around effort with 45 assists, eight digs, six kills, two blocks and two aces. Griffith added 11 kills and 21 digs, while Bozick picked up 30 digs and a pair of aces. Horenkamp led LMU with 14 kills and 16 digs. Lauren Kiwacka recorded 32 assists, 13 digs, four kills and two blocks with Alicia MacIntyre posting 24 digs.
