Volleyball Takes Three-Game Sweep Over Brevard
SALISBURY, NC -- Catawba picked up a three-game sweep of visiting Brevard in volleyball action on Tuesday night at Goodman Gym. The Catawba Indians won by the scores of 30-23, 30-24 and 30-26 to improve to 18-4. The Tornados fall to 11-7.
The teams battle in a tight first game with Brevard drawing even at 14-14 on a kill by Marqueesa Chappell (Lake Toxaway, NC). Melissa Griffith (Williamsburg, VA/Lafayette HS) would kill of two of the next three points as Catawba pulled out to a 17-14 edge. The Tornados pull to within 22-20, but Catawba reeled off five straight points to grab a comfortable 27-20 lead.
Catawba jumped out to an 11-3 lead in the second game, getting early aces by Griffith and Nikki Bozick (Boca Raton, FL/W. Boca HS). Brevard cut the deficit to 20-16, but Andi Henderson (Swansboro, NC/Swansboro HS) had two kills to help Catawba go on top 23-17.
In the third game, a kill by Katie Moran (Northville, MI/Northville HS) and an ace by Henderson sparked a 7-2 run by Catawba for a 19-12 lead. Brevard trailed 26-18 before a late rally made it close. Brooke Seaman (Spring Hill, FL) had three kills and two blocks in a 6-0 run that cut the lead to 26-24. Griffith ended the run with a kill for Catawba and Melissa Powers (Bennett, NC/N. Moore HS) had a block and a kill to end the match.
Griffith led Catawba with 16 kills, while Henderson had 42 assists, four kills and six digs. Powers and Mai Zoua Lo (Hickory, NC/Hickory HS) each recorded 10 kills. Seaman posted a game-high 19 kills to pace Brevard, while Chappell added a dozen.
