Men's Soccer Nipped by #18 Lenoir-Rhyne 1-0
SALISBURY, NC -- Lenoir-Rhyne scored the lone goal with just over four minutes to play as the NCAA II 18th-ranked Bears defeated host Catawba 1-0 in South Atlantic Conference men’s soccer action on Wednesday night at Frock Field. Lenoir-Rhyne improves to 11-1 overall and 1-1 in the SAC, while the Catawba Indians fall to 5-6 and 1-2.
The teams combined for 30 shots, but only Rocky Gifford (Lakeland, FL) found the net to give the visiting Bears the win. Gifford fired a shot the Catawba keeper Tyler Held (Virginia Beach, VA/Kellam HS) deflected, but the shot had enough steam to bounce just inside the back post in the 86th minute.
Both teams had ample scoring chances, including several by Catawba’s Ryan Villiard (Holiday, FL/Mitchell HS) that were just wide. Lenoir-Rhyne keeper Francisco Banuelos (Guadalajara, MEXICO) made a pair of saves to post the shutout, while Held recorded 13 saves in the Catawba net.
