Swimming Gears Up for Season With Pentathlon Event
The Catawba swim teams tuned up for the upcoming season with its annual Pentathlon intrasquad competition. Each swimmer swims a 100 of each stroke and a 100 IM with the lowest combined time earning the “Indian Warrior” and “Indian Princess” awards for the year. Freshman Meredith Shultz (Richmond, VA/James River HS) was the female winner, while Direnc Ozdemir (Stockholm, SWEDEN/Sodra Latin) won on the men’s side.
Shultz had a total time of 5:41.84 with senior Leigh Spada (Shelby, NC/Shelby HS) second (5:44.02) and freshman Katie Huff (New London, NC/N. Stanly HS) third (5:45.96). Ozdemer posted a time of 4:31.05 with freshman Corey Rogers (Spartanburg, SC/Dorman HS) second (4:45.87) and sophomore Patrik Drakes (Stockholm, SWEDEN/Rudbechs Gymnasium) third (4:48.78).
Spada was first in the 100 free, 100 back and 100 IM. Huff was the top swimmer in the 100 breast and Shultz took the win in the 100fly. Rogers won the men’s 100 free, 100 back and 100 IM. Drakes picked up the win in the 100 breast and Ozdemir in the 100 fly.
Huff’s time in the 100 breast (1:09.95) would set a school mark as would Rogers’ time in the 100 free (48.90) and the 100 IM (56.54). Ozdemer time in the 100 fly (54.51) is a record time.
