Baseball gets doubleheader split at Mt. OliveMOUNT OLIVE, NC -- Catawba College and host Mount Olive split a college baseball doubleheader on Wednesday afternoon at Scarborough Field. Catawba won the opener 7-3, while the Trojans fought back to take the second game 10-9. Catawba improves to 8-5, while Mount Olive now stands at 11-5.With the first game tied at 2-2 in the fifth inning, Catawba scored three times to take control. Blair Reynolds (King, NC) doubled, moved to third on single by Chad Hill (Bennett, NC) and scored on a wild pitch to put the Tribe up 3-2. Matt Smith (Browns Summitt, NC) singled home Hill, while Matt Baker (Charlotte, NC) singled home Curt Motsinger (Kernersville, NC), who had earlier walked. The Trojans got a run back in the sixth, but Catawba got a two-run single by Josh Jordan (Gastonia, NC) for the 7-3 lead. Mount Olive loaded the bases in the seventh on three consecutive walks with to open the frame, but Chris Abernathy (Claremont, NC) got a strikeout, a ground ball and another strikeout to end the threat and record his second save. Matt Fairweather (Lenoir, NC) picked up the win. He faced the first two batters of the seventh and allowed three runs, while scattering 10 hits to improve to 2-0. Catawba jumped out to a 4-1 lead after an inning and a half of the second game, but the Trojans but a five spot on the board in their second to lead 6-4. Smith doubled home two runs in the first and the Tribe got a run on a wild pitch and a RBI groundout from Spence Southard (Greensboro, NC) in the second. An error led to four of the Mount Olive runs in the second. The Indians would tie the game at 8-8 in the fifth on a two-out, two-run double by Jordan. In the sixth, Catawba went ahead as Reynolds scored on a passed ball. The Trojans would answer and went on top to stay on a two-run single by Bo Bridgers with two outs. Catawba got the tying run on base in the seventh, but Reynolds flied out to end the game. #######
