Landrum's Kickoff Return Sparks Football to 28-18 Win Over Newberry
SALISBURY, NC -- Catawba remained unbeaten with a 28-18 victory over visiting Newberry in South Atlantic Conference football action on Saturday night at Shuford Stadium and Kirkland Field. The Catawba Indians, ranked 13th in the AFCA Division II poll, improves to 6-0 overall and 2-0 in the SAC and pick up their second straight win over a ranked opponent. Newberry, ranked 19th, falls to 4-2 and 0-2.
Catawba fell behind 10-7 midway through the third quarter following a 40-yard field goal by Newberry’s Ryan Lukshis (Irmo, SC), but Travis Landrum (Inman, SC/Chapman HS) returned the ensuing kickoff 90 yard to put the Indians back on top for good. The return was the first for a Catawba score since Darrell Erby’s 95-yarder against Presbyterian in 1997.
After the return, Catawba held Newberry then drove 94 yards to grab a 21-10 lead with 1:02 to go in the third quarter. Newberry had forced a Tribe punt early in the drive, but a substitution infraction resulted in a first down and Catawba capitalized. Brad Roach (Williamston, NC/Williamston HS) converted a key third down with a 18-yard pass to Brandon Bunn (Virginia Beach, VA/Kellam HS) then followed with a 15-yard scoring strike to Joe Mitchell (Tallahassee, FL/Florida HS).
Jasmon Carpenter (Black Mountain, NC/Owen HS) ended a Newberry drive with an interception in the end zone and made a 93-yard return to the Newberry seven-yard-line. Kory Fisher (New Bern, NC/New Bern HS) would run in from two-yards out with 4:02 to play to give Catawba a 28-10 lead and ice the issue. Newberry tacked on a late score as Michael Johnson (Florence, SC) connected with David Smith (Union, SC) for a five-year score with 1:05 left.
Catawba had grabbed the early lead on a two-year pass on fourth down from Roach to Shane Timmons (Denton, NC/S. Davidson HS) at the 1:47 mark of the opening quarter. Newberry tied the game just before the half as Tharry Salley (Blackville, SC) scored from six-yards out. That score, with 29 seconds remaining in the half, was aided by a Catawba personal foul and two pass interference penalties.
Neither team totaled 300 yards with Catawba holding a slight 284 to 262 edge. Salley led Newberry with 95 yards rushing, while Roach paced Catawba as he completed 15-of-30 passes for 191 yards and two scores. Joe Brown (New Bern, NC/New Bern HS) recorded 10 tackles for the Catawba defense, including two for losses. Will Newell (Irmo, SC) and Derrell Mills (Gray Court, SC) each made seven tackles for Newberry.
