Volleyball Grabs 20th Win With Sweep of Carson-Newman
JEFFERSON CITY, TN – Catawba earned its third straight sweep with a win over host Carson-Newman in South Atlantic Conference volleyball action on Saturday afternoon at Holt Fieldhouse. The Catawba Indians won by the scores of 30-25, 30-15 and 30-26 and improves to 20-4 overall and 5-3 in the SAC. The Lady Eagles fall to 16-5 and 2-5.
Catawba used a 7-2 run early in the opening game to grab a 14-9 lead and stayed up by at least three points the rest of the game. Melissa Powers (Bennett, NC/N. Moore HS) had six kills in the first game for the Lady Indians. The Lady Indians led 13-10 in the second game before reeling off 12 of the next 14 points to go on top 25-12.
In the third game, an early 10-2 run by Catawba staked the Lady Indians to a comfortable 18-6 edge. Carson-Newman fought back within 27-24 and trailed 28-25 before Powers killed off the final two Catawba points. Mai Zoua Lo (Hickory, NC/Foard HS) had eight of her game-high 15 kills in the game.
Melissa Griffith (Williamsburg, VA/Lafayette HS) followed Lo with 14 kills, while Powers tallied 11. Andi Henderson (Swansboro, NC/Swansboro HS) registered 39 assists with seven digs and three aces.
Kelsey Fleck had 11 kills to pace Carson-Newman, while Katie Troyer added 10. Kelli Sorensen and Stephanie Cutter both reached double figures in digs with 12 and 11, respectively.
