Men's Soccer Falls to Newberry 3-1
SALISBURY, NC -- Newberry got a pair of goals by Debola Ogunseye (Lagos, NIGERIA) and topped host Catawba 3-1 in South Atlantic Conference men’s soccer action on Wednesday night at Frock Field. With the win, Newberry improves to 9-6 overall and 2-3 in the SAC. The Catawba Indians fall to 5-8 and 1-4.
Newberry struck first just 1:29 into the match as Ogunseye took a cross from Edsel Rudder (Arima, TRINIDAD) for the 1-0 edge. Catawba equalized just after halftime as Kyle Jones (Tallahassee, FL/Maclay School) fed a perfect through ball to Ryan Villiard (Holiday, FL/Mitchell HS) in stride just outside the box who dribbled in to the 12 before beating Newberry keeper Will Dieterich (Tampa, FL).
Ogunseye would answer quickly, stealing a ball from a Catawba defender which resulted in a breakaway goal in the 55th minute. Newberry drew a penalty kick in the 63rd minute, but Willard saved the shot by Phillippe Millogo (Vienna, VA) and the point-blank rebound attempt by Rudder to keep Catawba close.
Dieterich would tip several Catawba shots over the bar during the following 10 minutes to keep Newberry on top. Millogo tallied with just 12 seconds left on a breakaway for the final score. Willard made four saves Catawba in the final half, while Dieterich had 10 saves for Newberry, who gave up a dozen corner kicks.
