Baird Picks Up Two Second-Half Goals to Lift Women's Soccer to 3-1 Win

SALISBURY, NC -- Freshman Alexa Baird (Plainfield, NC/Mt. St. Mary’s Academy) scored a pair of second-half goals to lift host Catawba to a 3-1 win over Tusculum in South Atlantic Conference women’s soccer action on Saturday afternoon at Frock Field.  The win improves the Catawba Indians to 9-3-2 overall and 4-1-1 in the SAC, garnering a league-leading 13 points.  The Pioneers fall to 9-5 and 2-3.

Tasha Wilhelm (Mt. Savage, MD/Beall HS) opened the scoring in the ninth minute, getting an assist from Carrie Wollaston (Landenberg, PA/Ursuline Academy).  Tusuclum battled back to tie the score just 30 seconds in the final half on a tally by Danielle Tanner (Toronto, ONT, CANADA).

Baird would put the Lady Indians up to stay at the 56:24 mark as she scored off a feed from Lainey Nichols (Frederick, MD/Middletown HS).  The defender would get another goal in the 62nd minute on a header from Alyssa Schoenberg (Woodbury, MN/Woodbury HS) and Lauren Whiteley (Greensboro, NC/SE Guilford HS).

Senior Kathleen Blake (Greensboro, NC/NW Guilford HS) had three saves in goal for Catawba.  Tori Hadjopoulos (Greeneville, TN) had two stops for Tusculum.

“I am very pleased tonight as we put a full game together,” said Catawba coach John Cullen.  “I thought we were the better team throughout and I think it sends a message to the region that we are having a strong season.  As a team, we just played good soccer tonight.  I would also like to extend a special thanks to Mr. & Mrs. Hinkle for the pre-game meal.”
